The Strange Ones

The Strange Ones

USA 2017 / 81 min

Two brothers (Alex Pettyfer and James Freedson-Jackson) hit the road following a tragic event that changes their lives forever. They stay off the main roads on their journey to nowhere in particular, deceiving everyone they encounter, even those who show them kindness for no reason whatsoever. And they deceive themselves as well, as they slowly get lost in the lies that they repeat every day. In their feature debut, Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff play with the familiar tropes of road movies only to quickly erase all traces of the familiar: in The Strange Ones, nothing is as it might seem. And certainly not the film’s hard-to-classify protagonists and the odd, tension-filled relationship that binds them. “Having fun?” One of them asks ironically at the beginning of the film. Terrence Malick-whose work these novice filmmakers refer to at every turn-would certainly answer this question in the affirmative.
