Sylvio

Sylvio

USA 2017 / 80 min

Sylvio Bernardi (Albert Birney) hates his job. His life is a routine: he sits behind a desk at a debt-collection company playing solitaire for hours before returning home to heat up dinner and eat it in front of the television. Sound familiar? Of course, it does. Unlike the thousands of people who spend their days in exactly the same manner, however, Sylvio is a gorilla. Albert Birney-this time with the help of co-director Kentucker Audley and financing from a Kickstarter campaign-finally returns to the somewhat forgotten character who earned him Internet fame several years ago. Although Sylvio is still just a man in a rubber mask-a vision that would make Caesar from Planet of the Apes grab his head in despair-this film reveals previously unknown layers of sensitivity. Playing with his favorite puppet, named Herbert Herpels, which would undoubtedly appeal to Wes Anderson, proves that you can’t judge anyone by appearances. Ultimately, apes are kinda human.
